On the Road: California Design, 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way

2012’s Pacific Standard Time show at LACMA, was an excellent showcase, and celebration of the best design work and design ethos from California’s golden era.

In order to ensure that LA’s South Bay was duly represented, I donated this Greg Noll board to LACMA. All original with a “figure 8” stringer, this beauty is now a long way from it’s original birthplace in Manhattan Beach. The board is part of the traveling PST exhibit which is now in Salem, MA at the Peabody Essex Museum through July 6, 2014.  Having circumnavigated the globe, stopping in Kyoto, Japan and Brisbane, Australia and in Auckland New Zealand at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. It’s great to see this celebration of form and function on a global scale.  Exporting California goodness is most definitely GMS.

But with artworks the history of a picture’s journey through time also tells an important story. Where a picture has been, who its various owners were, and where it has been exhibited and published all reveal something about how it was valued, and how it was interpreted—that is to say, what the painting meant, even “said,” to those who experienced it in the past.
